How to Increase Your Score in the NEET Physics

It is a known fact that medical aspirants find the NEET Physics section to be the toughest among the 3 subjects in the NEET exam. And Physics is the game changer. Doing well in Physics requires conceptual clarity, analytical and problem-solving skills. The good news is that all these attributes can be acquired and sharpened through sustained time, effort and practice.

Out of 180 questions in NEET exam question paper – 45 questions are from Physics section. Each correct answer fetches 4 marks while a wrong answer reduces the score by 1 mark.

Now, what needs to be our game plan to score high in the NEET Physics section?

Listed below are a few NEET physics preparation tips:

  1. Know the Physics syllabus completely: Get a complete list of the Physics syllabus for the NEET exam at this site – https://ntaexams.co.in/neet-syllabus-2019/
  2. Get a firm grip on the concepts: NEET is a competitive exam which tests the conceptual clarity of students. Hence it is essential that we understand the concepts thoroughly.  Once this is done, application of the concept to solve numerical problems will come easily.
  3. Determine the priority with which the topics can be approached for NEET Exam:

Table 1 Weightage/ Analysis

NEET PHYSICS UNITS NEET Previous 3 year Weightage Analysis
Mechanics 37.56
Heat & Thermodynamics 12.67
Electrostatics and Magnetism 16.22
Current Electricity & EMI 14.67
Optics & Modern Physics 18.89

The table below lists the suggested importance and difficulty level combinations, that we can use while studying NEET Physics topics.

Table 2 Order suggested to approach NEET Physics topics:

Category No. Level of importance Level of difficulty
1 High Easy
2 High Moderate
3 Low Easy
4 Low Moderate
5 High Difficult
6 Low Difficult

Here are some recommended guidelines regarding – which topics have higher importance as per NEET exam pattern and how we can classify the topics based on the level of difficulty.

  • Easy topics from student perspective (with level of importance for NEET physics preparation )
Class XI Class XII
Topic / Chapters Easy topics from student perspective Topic / Chapters Easy topics from student perspective
Units and Measurement Low Electrostatics High
Motion in One Dimension Low Current Electricity Low
Motion in Two Dimension Low Magnetism Low
Work, Power and Energy High Alternating Current Low
Gravitation Low EM Waves Low
Properties of Solids Low Atoms High
Heat and Thermodynamics High Nuclei High
Oscillations Low Dual nature of matter and Radiation High
Waves High Electronics and Semi-conductor Devices Low

Please note that, by following this approach – we will be able to attempt atleast 30 Physics questions by focusing on the first 2 categories alone (Level of difficulty being Easy).

  • Moderately difficult topics from student perspective for NEET preparation
Class XI Class XII
Topic / Chapters Moderately difficult topics from student perspective Topic / Chapters Moderately difficult topics from student perspective
Properties of Fluids High Ray Optics Low
Electromagnetic Induction Low

By following this approach, we will be able to attempt 35 Physics questions by focusing on the first 4 categories alone (Level of difficulty being Easy and Moderate).

  • Difficult topics from student perspective for NEET preparation
Class XI Class XII
Topic / Chapters Moderately difficult topics from student perspective Topic / Chapters Moderately difficult topics from student perspective
Laws of Motion Low Wave Optics Low
System of Particles and Rotational Dynamics High Magnetic Effect of Current High

4. Get help to strengthen your weak areas: We need to put in focused effort to improve our weak areas. We can follow the same order listed in Table 2, in order to strengthen our performance in weak areas.

5. Take notes while going through each topic: It is highly recommended that, we jot down notes – as that is a highly personalized approach which helps us to quickly recap the main points. Notes help the students during last-minute revisions for NEET preparation.

6. Take mock tests and analyze performance each time: This helps us to check our level of preparedness and understand the tricky questions to be anticipated. Knowing a subject wise-analysis gives us a clear perspective of which topics to focus on. And it also makes us realize our strong and weak areas.

7. Keep revising: Keep revising all the concepts and the related formulae. This will ensure that we have the appropriate formula at our fingertips to crack any problem in NEET.

We at SLC emphasis that, the approach outlined above will definitely help to maximize our score in this section. Good Luck!
